Baby Sing Language Anyone?

So now that Palmer is closing in on 6 months (on the 19th!-I can't believe it), I have been looking into starting to teach him baby sign language. My best friend Bethany taught it to her kids and I loved that they could let her know when they wanted water, milk...and so on. Any suggestions? A good website? Book? Anyone have any experience with it?

Robert and I take private sign lessons. I use sign language everyday at work. This is a great you tube video that shows a baby signing.

I have a client who uses Sign Time and loves it. Signing with your baby is amazing and it allows him to ask for what he needs when he doesn't have the words for it yet. You don't have to use conventional sign if you don't want to. You can just make up signs that you as parents and your baby know. They can be an approximation of the actual sign, or not. You are such a well informed mommy... I love reading your blog. Keep up the good work!

I've been teaching Teagan sign language and it is so fun when he finally picks up on a sign. The signs he does right now are "finished" or all done and "milk" and hi/bye.

The advice that I would give would be to be consistent. All done is the only sign he does without being prompted first and I think it is because Zac and I both do the sign EVERY single time he is done eating. Now he does it on his own to let us know he is full.

I've heard that you should just choose 2-3 signs at a time and then increase the number as they start to understand. I've also heard that you need to always talk while you're signing so that the baby doesn't use sign instead of learning how to speak.

I think someone told me that when the baby starts to wave they can start signing, but we started when Teag was like 5 months. He didn't start doing the signs until he was 7 or 8 months though. I hope it goes well for you!

I read "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Baby Sign Language." I want to teach Olivia sign language too and I found the book was a good starting point. It also got a lot of great reviews on Amazon. There are also a lot of great websites.

My friend taught her baby the basics and she said it was great when he could tell her when he wanted to feed.

You'll have to keep us posted on your progress.

Also, PBS has a sign language show on twice a week--I think on Monday and Friday but I am not sure of the time (maybe 12:30 and 4???) Also I would check out books from the library. They have some cute ones!

And funny--Kate's only sign is all done too, but I love it so much! It is nice to know when she is done eating!

I have used sign with all of my kids. Brinley did very well but Kolbi wouldn't start talking because she just used sign so it kind of held her up. There are lots of books on the subject. Good Luck! Bye the way...Palmer is so cute!

PBS's one is called signing time. And it is SOOOO good. All 3 of my kids love it, we bought the first few which are really basic and help you learn them so you can teach your baby. I really recommend the signing time movies.
